Letter from the Principal

Dear Families,

Welcome to Saint Matthew’s Catholic School, a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence!  It means that we, the faculty, staff, parents, and students, take seriously the mission of providing for and participating in a Catholic educational program that is academically rigorous and engaging for our school community.

We are also a Virginia Distinguished Purple Star School. The designation is awarded to military-friendly schools that have demonstrated a major commitment to students and families connected to our nation’s military. St. Matthew’s is very proud to be recognized as a Virginia Distinguished Purple Star School.  We have an exceptionally strong connection with our armed forces. A large portion of our student population is from military families.

At St. Matthew’s we have implemented the “Leader In Me” program that teaches children leadership skills starting in Early Learners age 2 through eighth grade.  In 2018 we were designated as one of 385 Lighthouse Schools Worldwide. We are extremely proud of the honor of this designation, as it recognizes that St. Matthew’s is a Beacon for others to Model. The Leader In Me Program is based on The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. This program also combats bullying at its core – teaching children to respect each other and learning real skills to form positive relationships. As principal, I believe leadership is communicating people’s worth and potential so clearly that they are inspired to see it in themselves. My goal is to graduate our students, each one having the skills to:

Live a faith-filled life
Live by Catholic principles
Lead his or her own life
Be a strong example for others
Be an influence for good
We graduate students who have the life skills to be successful in high school, college, and beyond.

In addition to teaching leadership skills, the faculty differentiates instruction in order to meet the individual needs of all our students. We identify students who are both challenged and accelerated in the subjects of reading and math and tailor programs to meet their needs. Our middle school students have the ability to earn high school credit in the subject areas of algebra, geometry, and Spanish.

Please explore our website and call our office for a private tour. My own children attended St. Matthew’s from Early Learners age 2 through eighth grade, and I couldn’t have found a better place to prepare them for success. I believe in our mission, our community, and our school. Come visit us and we will make you a believer also!

Sincerely,

Louis L. Goldberg
